Our second full week in kindergarten was very busy! We enjoyed The Little Beaver and the Echo by Eric Liwin. We read Pete the Cat and His Groovy Buttons. We practiced recognizing a pattern in a book Pete Loves His Shoes and looking for the color words we have been working to recognize. After reading A Teacher For Bear by Anne Marie Pace the children participated in a book response: What Makes a Great Teacher? We read When Autumn Comes by Robert Maass. We enjoyed the big book Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom & worked on individual pages. The children enjoyed the stickers and letter stamps. You may have seen your child's work come home. We are learning about read to self. Three ways to read a book: picture, words, retelling. We are working on what read to self looks like. The children are doing 3 minutes. On Friday we read and discussed: All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. We listened for rhyming words in this story. Our handwriting practice included two frog jumping letters: Capital F & E. In math we reviewed patterns. Children are practicing extending and creating simple shape patterns. We have been using leaves and pattern blocks. We are talking about 2D shapes and have focused on circle, square, & triangle.
Writer's Workshop begins with a mini lesson which sometimes includes a mentor text.
The children then are given independent writing time.
In kindergarten we ask that you do not spell for your writer.
The children are working on independence:
practicing saying the word they wish to write, listening for the sound,
and writing the letter they hear.
The alphabet chart you see in this picture is an important tool.
Her story includes a koala, using the internet to help draw a koala.
Writer's Workshop closes with sharing our great writing.
Here he is telling about his illustrations which are full of detail!
We are off to a great start!
The children see to like both the online and paper pieces of Scholastic News.
Right now, we are completing the pencil/paper piece together.
If time allows revisiting the issues would be beneficial.
See what parts your child remember and can read to you!
