Third Week in October: October 16-20th

We are working to build a responsive classroom.
This simple story is about celebrating uniqueness and working together as a group.
We are having daily discussions about getting to know each other, helping each other, working together, and following the group plan.

Mystery Science Lesson

On Monday, fire hats were dropped off mid-day to the children.
They were thrilled to receive them!

Many children chose to wear them.

Quiet Time Choice: Drawing and Coloring

Math and Handwriting
Practicing the correct formation of three and four.

Working in his Handwriting without Tears workbook on page three.

Working in his Handwriting without Tears workbook on page four
Number 4: Four rectangles

Kindergarten Math Goals include being able to read, recall, and write 0-30.
Being able to name 2D shapes.

Choice Time: Art Table
Leaf rubbings

They enjoyed trying out both the rubbings and stencils.

Cutting around his leaf shape.

Morning Meaning Activity
Ask your child to sing you the falling leaves song and show you the motions

Writing
Writer's Workshop consists of a whole group mini-lesson.
This one is encouraging the children to not ask How Do You Spell...?
Instead, they are learning strategies for how to write on their own.
We do this together, in a group.

It is followed by practice.
This happens in small groups.
The children are working on extending their stories.
The adults are conferencing with individuals or small groups.

Writer's Workshop typically ends with Share Time.
Writers write about what they know.
Sharing his story about playing a bingo game at home.

Tuesday's Read Aloud

We are working on establishing classroom rules.
He is tracing his hand to be used in a poster which will display our class contract for all to reference.

Cutting his hand for our poster.

Some children fancied their hands with nail polish, rings, watches etc.

Our class contract.
We worked on discussing what it should say.
Each child traced and cut their hand to add to the poster.
This is as far as we got.
We are not finished yet.
Next week we hope to have a finished contract!

A Quiet Time choice on Tuesday: Color By Number (10-15)
Working on reading color words.
Numbers 10-15
Kindergarten Goal: Read numbers to 30.

A book with a stuffy is always a choice at Quiet Time.

Handwriting this week: lowercase g and q.

Choice Time: Small sea animals

Choice Time: Puzzles
A new puzzle to try!

She returned to school and was pleased to discover she had a gift from the firefighters.

One read aloud on Wednesday.

School pictures went well on Wednesday.
There will eventually be a retake day.

Reading:
Phonological Awareness Practice
Syllables

Completing independent work clapping or stopping out 1, 2, and 3 syllable words.

You can practice this at home as well.
Give your child a one, two, three, or four-syllable word to ...
clap out
stomp out
Another way you may see used to help solve:
They can put their hand under their chin
and feel how many syllables result when they say the word out loud.

Quiet Time Choice: Whiteboards

Math
How Old Are You?
Learning about how to make and read a horizontal graph.
This is a changing graph.
On your child's birthday, they will move their cupcake to 6 or 7.

When time allows please help your child to learn their birthday.
Once that is secure they can learn what season their birthday lands in.

Collecting leaves outside for the art table leaf rubbings!

Rubbings and stencils are tricky for this age.
They worked very hard to hold things still to complete the task!

Choice time: Sorting butterflies

Great read-aloud we enjoyed.
I highly recommend revisiting this story.

Reading:
Pete the Cat Word Wall
Children are being encouraged to build their collection of snap words
words they can read and hopefully use in their writing.
Our word wall is growing.

This week's word study: me
Independent work: star paper highlighting the snap word me.

When children practice reading with me they are working on securing concepts of print.

At this time of year, many children are holding the book down with one hand,
practicing careful pointing under each word with their pointer finger.
The emergent readers are predictable, have a pattern, and include the words we are studying.
When listening to your child read at home, please have them hold the book and turn the pages themselves.
It is okay to say "Try that again."

Our Director of Transportation and Officer Galvin taught us bus safety.

Some children were asked to try the lever on the window to show classmates nearby
what to do in the case of an emergency.

All children were able to experience lifting the red lever at the back of the bus
in case the back of the bus is the best way to evacuate.
I was with them teaching this piece.

Officer Galvin was on the other side of the door to guide each child out the back onto a mat.

Sit and jump carefully.

Sit safely off to the side.

Thursday's Quiet Time Choice: Minions Cosmic Yoga

Revisiting Pumpkin Jack instead of yoga.

Math and Handwriting:

Choice Board
I hope your child is sharing what they are choosing for choice time.

Science
Learning about the scientific method.

Science
Apple experiment: Making a hypothesis based on what we have learned about apples.
Will the apple sink or float?

Conducting the experiment.

Observing what happens.
Discussing and recording results.

Our class recorded the process together as group.

Exploring the inside of an apple after the experiment.
