First Week in October

We enjoyed this book.

Our first Q-Tip Painting:
an apple

Fine Motor Practice

Monday's Quiet Time Choices:
Rest quietly
Rest with a book
Coloring fall leaves with colored pencils

John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) was new to all the children!

Our first dot-to-dot 0-15.

Math: Sequencing 0-15
The children are working on the recognition of 0-19 (so far).
They are working on matching the correct quantities.
They are working on sequencing.
They are working on number formation.

Tuesday's Morning Message
This month we will have a Leader of the Day each day.
The leader will take the message home to share.

Monday was Custodians Appreciation Day!
At Writer's Workshop, we generated this message for our custodian Mel!
We took a photo and all signed the big card (poster)!
Our school gave cards and messages to our custodians on Wednesday!
Mel has hung ours on her storage closet door.  The children love walking past it. ♥️
It is nice to hear them connect with her at the end of the day.
Here are some of what I am hearing:
"Hi, Mel!"
"Look there is Mel!"
"Thanks, Mel!"

Tuesday's Quiet Time choices:

Color by Numbers

These are intended to be done independently while a number of things are happening in the classroom including making sure all the children try the bathroom at this time before Allied Arts.

Miss Moe joins us for handwriting practice.  Learning about "Magic C."

It is important that the c is formed correctly.
C turns into a, d, g, q, o, etc.

Practicing lowercase c on the chalkboards.
Dry try, and wet try.

A movement break between instructional lessons: Warrior poses!

The children enjoyed this fun story!

Phonological awareness work: syllables
Words are from the story we read.

Determining 1, 2, or 3-syllable words

Cafeteria
All the kindergarten classes have lunch together in our cafeteria.
If your child brings lunch from home they go straight to their lunch table and begin.
If you are concerned with the amount of time your child has to eat this option affords them the most time.

School lunch line.
Kindergarten Goal: to memorize their lunch number.
Confidently stating their lunch number will speed up the process,
and offer more time for all to eat.

We practice saying or reading the lunch number each day in the classroom
and then practice saying it nice and loudly for the staff member in the cafeteria.

Your child's lunch number is their student ID number on PowerSchool.
If your child does not have it memorized yet, it would be helpful if you could
practice it at home when time allows, thanks!
One idea: A sticky note on the wall near their bed, practice each night, review each morning.

Quiet Time on Wednesday:
Rest quietly
Rest with book
Whiteboard drawing

Science!

Accessing prior knowledge:
What's science?
Each child was given an opportunity to post something on our poster!

We read this great story whole group.

We learned the above from this story!

We had our first Mystery Science Lesson:

Read Aloud
They loved this book! 😍
Many children knew it, but were happy to hear it again!

Thanks for sending jackets in case needed!

An award-winning Read Aloud:
We discussed the holiday and no school day
Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Reading

During the reading block, we work on building reading stamina.
We are practicing private reading and are now reading for 4 minutes without interruptions as a class.
It takes time to teach eighteen 5 and 6 years olds how to use their reading time well
and demonstrate they can do this as a team.  Eventually, after this stamina has increased,
I will pull small groups for phonological awareness and reading work.

Mrs. Wishy Washy by Joy Cowley has been a favorite for retelling!

She has chosen to keep this one in her book bin for practice.

Reading Pete Loves Shoes a book we created at school and learned the pattern.
This book required the children to look closely for color words.

I am seeing some nice friendships evolving.
Ask your child about their outdoor play!

Thursday's Quiet Time Choices:
Rest quietly
Rest with a book
Cosmic Yoga: Popcorn and the Pirates

Math & Handwriting
Practicing formation of 3, 4, and 5!

A four-day week.
Book orders were sent home on Thursday.
The children were thrilled.
Thank you for your order!

At the end of this month/beginning of November, the PCPA is sponsoring a Book Fair.
I will wait until early December to do our next classroom order.

No school Monday - Indigenous Peoples' Day!
Enjoy the long weekend!
