First Week in November

Monday was Halloween and then we rolled into November!

We enjoyed Jack Prelutsky's famous poem!

On October 31st we said goodbye to October and our AABB pattern.
jack o'lantern, jack o'lantern, ghost, ghost
We had fun celebrating a couple of birthdays in our class, had Picture Day,
and they LOVED Halloween Day!

We read and enjoyed Creepy Pair of Underwear!

Each student designed their own pair of creepy underwear!

It was wear black and orange day too!

We also made candy corn.
Many materials were available at the art table all week.
This fine motor activity took a little longer to complete!

Showing stamina to complete an activity!
Working at choice time to finish.

Proud of her finished artwork!

Practicing partner reading!

The children select a book from their bucket and practiced reading it to their partner.
He is reading his Pumpkin Life Cycle book.

The partner who is reading practices handling the book, turning the pages,
and pointing under the print with their pointer finger to carefully match.

Partners should be elbow, elbow, knee, knee (EEKK).
They need to quickly determine who will read first.

After one partner has read a full book from the cover to the end, they switch and allow the other partner to read.  He is reading his Pete Love Shoes book!

Phonics practice on Halloween
Pull a pumpkin and make its sound.
We are learning to listen to what is asked.
This game is looking for the sound, not the letter name.

Kindergarten Goals:
Produce all consonant letter sounds.
Produce all short vowel sounds.
Produce all long vowel sounds.
Anything you can squeeze in at home regarding sound work would be helpful.

Searching for the word like.

During our reading block, we study letters and words.
You may hear your child call it a "snap word."
After studying it, they should know the high-frequency word in a snap.

Kindergarten Goal: Read common high-frequency words by sight.

We will be working on the top 40 high-frequency words for kindergarten.
We are currently about 8 words into that list.
Words we have studied: a, I, the, me, can, see, like, my
We have also worked often with the color words
red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink, black, white, brown, and gray.

When these word work worksheets come home it would be helpful if you could ask
your child to read to you the word they studied.
If they have forgotten it would be helpful to have that word hung
somewhere in the house to practice reading until confident.
These are words we are hoping they can read quickly.

Eventually, we look to see them use them in their creative writing.

Choosing to draw your own picture has been a popular choice at our choice time!
I see many working on sketching and trying to improve their drawing skills,
giving their best effort to draw more detailed pictures!
