First Two Days of Kindergarten: September 5th & 6th

Our first day in the classroom was busy! We practiced some of our routines (lockers, hand washing, greeting others, lining up, snack & lunch expectations, playground safety, mailboxes, Home/School folder, and more).  We learned about our daily schedule and had our first World Language class (Spanish) and gym!  We read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and completed projects based on the book.

As part of a group, the class shared how they felt on the first day.

Working on his own kissing hand.
Practicing writing his name.
Tracing his hand.

Practicing writing her name.
Tracing her hand.
Coloring her hand.
Shard how she was feeling on the first day of kindergarten.
Picked a heart sticker for her hand.

Adding details.
A variety of feelings were shared.

These were sent home in your child's Home/School Folder.
Thank you for looking for your child's Home/School Folder each day, cleaning it out,
and sending it back on the next school day!

First visit to our playground Little Adventureland.

Spending time on the structure.

Spending time in the sand area by the boat.

Shovels and dump trucks were enjoyed.

Exploring. the outdoor kitchen.

   Already working and playing together.

The first recess is followed by lunch in the cafeteria.
When having lunch from home, the children bring their lunch boxes
and water bottles to recess to prepare for the cafeteria.

When your child brings a lunch from home they go straight to the table to eat.

Our class sits together, three children on each side of the table.

Quiet time follows.
Quiet instrumental music was played.
On the first day, the children selected from these three options:
1. Rest on the rug
2. Color
3. Look at a book

Señora Esten came for the children's first World Language Class.

Mrs. Estan introduced herself and shared that they would be learning Spanish with her.
They played name games.
They learned some songs.

Center Time followed Spanish.
Five Centers were introduced on the first day.
The children learned how we plan for a center and how many children can be in each center.
They learned how to responsibly use and put away materials as a team.

He will be in our classroom often.

The first day of kindergarten ended with the Allied Art Gym.
The children met Mr. Shields and
were able to explore his space, the gym!
We had a nice first day!

We watched a short Jack Hartman video about the importance of handwashing.
The children learned the steps through a fun song.
We all practiced handwashing together before snack.
We will be washing our hands several times a day including, but not limited to upon arrival, before snack, and after using the bathroom.

Read Aloud
I read this story on the first day of kindergarten.
We revisited it again with another read on day two, and had fun making their own crown.

They talked about being kings and queens and they fancied their crowns.

We measured the crowns and fit them to the children's heads.
It was a choice whether or not to wear them.
Everyone should have come home from school with a crown.

They are taking a peek at a Scholastic Book Club opportunity.
The information for ordering was sent home in your child's Home/School Folder on Friday.
If you are interested in ordering, please order online by the end of the day on September 15th.
I expect the books to be delivered to the classroom before the end of September.

School lunch is available in the cafeteria.
There is no cost.
When your child is ready to try school lunch it would be helpful if you put a note in your child's Home/School Folder.
I will plan to walk your child through the routine.
I will help them relay to the cafeteria worker their lunch number.
Your child will eventually learn their lunch number.
If your child will be doing school lunch regularly, it would would be helpful to start learning the number.
It is their PowerSchool ID.  They will use this same number each year at Pond Cove.

Math
Everyday Mathematics (EDM) is the math program we use at Pond Cove.
Our math lesson on Friday was an introduction and Guided Discovery of six shapes.
Pattern Blocks were introduced.
The children learned how to be responsible exploring pattern blocks and how to clean them up.
They learn where they will be kept in the classroom.

Centers on Day Two
Two additional centers were introduced: Easel and Pretend.

Trying the Easel with Dry Erase Expo Markers and Erasers.

Taking on the challenge of the truck puzzle, is not as easy as it may appear!

A message that was created at the Writing Center.
Please be watching for these fun notes to be coming home in your child's Home/School Folder.

Receiving thumbs up for the new center choice!

On Friday their day ended with Art as an Allied Art
The children met Ms. Gaare.

On the very first day of art class, our class and Ms. Carey's learned about the art vocabulary word "line". They sang a song about different types of lines, from straight to vertical to wavy, and many more. After learning the line song, they practiced drawing different lines on paper with crayons. Then they used paper, glue, and their fine motor skills to turn straight lines into 3-dimensional curved lines.
They glued those down to make their final artwork.

Ready for dismissal.

We had a nice first couple of days together.
Thank you for trusting your children with us!
I hope you are enjoying the weekend as a family.
I will look for your child in front
of Pond Cove on Monday morning! ♥️😍
