Our first few days in the classroom were busy! We practiced our routines (lockers, hand washing, greeting others, lining up, snack & lunch expectations, playground safety, mailboxes, Home/School Folder, and more). On day one they learned about our daily schedule and the children had their first World Language Class (Spanish) and gym! We read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and completed projects based on the book.
As a group, the class shared how they felt on the first day.
Practicing writing his name.
Tracing his hand.
Coloring his hand.
Shared how he was feeling on the first day of kindergarten.
Picked a heart sticker for his hand.
These were sent home in your child's Home/School Folder.
Thank you for looking for your child's Home/School Folder each day, cleaning it out,
and sending it back on the next school day!
First visit to our playground Little Adventureland.
Exploring the kitchen.
Exploring the boat in the sand area.
Sharing in the garden.
When your child brings a lunch from home they go straight to the table to eat.
Lunch from home offers the most time to eat.
The class eats together at three long tables (six tables total)
with up to three children on each side of each table.
When your child chooses lunch from school, I will show them the routine: pick a milk, choose the main meal, navigate the fruit and vegetable bar, stop at the cashier to say their lunch number and stop to pick up utensils and condiments needed. This process takes them a little practice, but they are eventually able to do it independently! When your child is ready to try this for the first time drop me a note and I will be there to support them. Their lunch number is their PowerSchool Id. number. It is helpful if they work to memorize this number. It will be their number for all five years at Pond Cove.
Recess follows lunch in the cafeteria and then we have Quiet Time.
Quiet Instrumental music was played. On the first day the children selected from these three options:
1 Rest on the Rug
2. Color
3. Look at a book
You may hear your child talk about Mrs. Snyder.
She will supervise the children most days in the cafeteria and the recess that follows. 😍
Learning a hello song with movements in Spanish from Señora Esten.
A movement song with Mrs. Esten!
The children also had their first gym class.
They met Mr. Purin, explored his space, the gym!
Day one included the introduction of a few centers after Gym.
The children learned how to plan for a center
and how to responsibly use and put away materials as a team.
Games: Playing Tic Tac Toe.
A little more time to color with markers on the mural that was out on Kindergarten Kick Off Day.
Art Table: Exploring with Play Doh and tools!
Puzzles: Alphabet caterpillar
Numbers 1-12
Writing and Drawing:
Mr. Davis (our Speech Pathologist) joins in on the conversations at Writing and Drawing.
Dismissal is a busy time!
A student is selected to lead each bus line with these colorful signs.
It is helpful if you review with your child their dismissal plan each morning
before they leave, thanks.
We had a nice first day together!
On Friday after, Morning Meeting, the children had their first math lesson. Our math program is EveryDay Math. This lesson included the introduction of six shapes and colors and their features.
a pattern
The children had some exploration time with the wooden pattern blocks and built some wonderful things!

Compliments have begun: a peer sharing how much she loved her amazing design!
They are already inspiring others!
extending his design
Snack follows math
Thank you for providing a healthy snack each day and a low profile water bottle.
The tall thin water bottles are very hard for 5 & 6 year olds to manage. They tip over and spill and are dropped on the floor often. The lower profile water bottles like in this photo work great.
We have a nice water filtration spot by the office to refill them! Please write your child's name on them.
Thank you for your support!
When the weather is good the children have two recesses a day!
Thank you for sending sneakers so they can run and climb safely!
Collecting twigs to use at the outdoor kitchen.
Looking for caterpillars in the milkweed.
Collecting rocks for a voyage out to sea.
Offering "fruit sushi" to Mrs. Cornell. :)
Read Aloud
In this story a little boy takes pride in his first day of kindergarten
There was a brief lesson about the letters in each of our names
and we worked on recognizing each others names. Each student made a crown.
They enjoyed fancying them up!
Some were proud to show them off and were if I took a photo!
Read Aloud
I read this fun story to them to help prepare for their first art class!
They met Ms. Gaare and had the opportunity to explore her classroom space!
Centers on day 2
Games was popular so a small Tic Tac Toe was added for two more to play!
Puzzles
A large truck
Centers
The Art Easel was added.
These two children are working on sharing the board space and materials.

If children finish a picture and wish to change centers they sign it,
so all can admire their work before it is erased.

We are practicing these Peaceful Pond Cove expectations daily.
We had a nice couple of days together.
Thank you for trusting your children with us!
I hope you are enjoying the weekend as a family!
I will look for your child in front of Pond Cove on Monday morning! ♥️😍
New things to try next week:
Monday: First Music with Ms. Bean.
We will practice safety procedures including a fire drill.
Wednesday: First full Spanish class.
