Martin Luther King, Jr. 

We have been learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We read a variety of mentor texts about this historical figure in American history. We used our Scholastic Let's Find Out to talk about similarities and differences. We also listened to parts of MLK's "I have a dream" speech. The children were very interested in learning about him and especially seemed to enjoy a black and white video of him speaking. We are trying to keep in mind "the golden rule" when we work and play at school. The children wrote their dreams and they are hung outside our classroom for you to read.

Please remember that when we write, we work hard to record the letter sounds that we hear in words.

Conventional spelling will come with time and practice. Many of the children are however making a conscious effort to include the high frequency words that we are studying. These are words they have learned to read and spell and will be spelled correctly. We often refer to these as "snap words" - words we can read and write in a snap and do not think too much about. They are also known as "sight words." We are also working on conventions like spacing, using a capital letter to start our sentence, lowercase letters when needed and punctuation at the end of our sentence - so much to think about for a kindergarten writers!
