Meet Mat Man!
Mat Man was introduced this week!
Our school uses the Handwriting Without Tears Program (HWOT). Mat Man is made of big and little lines and big and little curves. We practiced drawing a person this week. We did a guided discovery of dry erase markers.

Taking good care of ourselves:

We are enjoying the fresh air with two outdoor times daily (weather permitting).
Exercising our large muscles.

Taking good care of each other:

We read this story which addresses food allergies.
We watched and discussed this video which
reminded us about not sharing food at school.

The boys remember their green!
Taking care of others outside of our school community:
Wear Green
Bring Green Day!

The girls are wearing many shades of green!
Pond Cove School raised $2,229.69!
Well done!
Our self portraits are hung in the hallway for all to enjoy!

In effort to build our classroom community, we have been learning about our strengths. We added to our self-portraits what we are experts at:
"I am an expert at helping people reach things
up high because I am tall."
"I am an expert at drawing. I like to try art."

Plan on your child's water bottle staying at school, unless

Our first full day of kindergarten!
Much of our instruction included learning about how to walk in the hall, wash hands, use the bathroom, eat snack, safety on the playground, routines in the lunchroom etc. It may not be the most exciting learning, but it is essential. The children were were patient and very good listeners! Below are a few photos from the day!
We read and discussed
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.

Group work.

We learned that many were feeling more than one
emotion on the first day of kindergarten!
We learned what snack is like in our classroom.
Making an ink handprint to go with
our first day of school poem.
We learned about recess
and had two outdoor times.
We had lunch in the cafeteria
after the second recess.

Picking a heart sticker for the print
& fancying up the poem.
These poem papers came home via
your child's home/school folder.

Choice time: a creative easel design.
The bus ride home after a long first day!
Phew! We made it!

Welcome!
I am excited to be teaching kindergarten again this year and look forward to meeting all children and their families very soon! I encourage families to visit our classroom blog often! It will be the spot where I will update you on our learning. You will be able to see the children working and playing. I hope you can take a few moments regularly throughout the school year to share the posts with your child. Please see the 2017-2018 Classroom Supply List. Have fun getting your supplies ready for school. Enjoy the rest of summer! See you in September!
