This week we had our first trip to the Math Lab with Mrs. Butterworth!
We will go to the Math Lab once a month. This month we worked on patterns. The children enjoyed going upstairs to a classroom that is devoted to all to math and they loved Mrs. Butterworth! Thank you Allison McLaughlin (Robbie's mom) for volunteering!

Taking turns to play a pattern partner game.
A completed ABCD Pattern.

Reciting the pattern to make sure it repeats.
Which one will I chose for my pattern?

Creating a pattern with colorful stackers
and recording it on paper.

Brand new for our class ...
SMART Board patterning with Mrs. Butterworth!
Always a favored activity!

Well our day was cut short unexpectedly but you can ask your child about guidance with Mrs. Gallagher!  :)
Ask your child what they learned from Mo Jo.
"Give myself a hug as needed."
"If I practice the monkey bars each day I will get better at them."
"I can use my muscles at school."

Developing a Community of Learners

Has your child shared that together we created classroom rules?

Yes, getting 15 five year olds to be in on the same thing takes a little time, but we did it!

Our hands are all in and signatures were added.

Traveling Rules
Our rules travel with us wherever we go.
We agreed that wherever ever we are,
whether we are with our Allied Arts teachers,
in Math Lab,
or on a field trip,
we will do our best to follow these rules.

We have been reading about pumpkins. We read Pumpkin, Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington, a book that highlights the life cycle of a pumpkin. We read a non fiction book with wonderful photographs called A Day at the Pumpkin Patch by Faulkner and Krawesky. We have learned a couple fun pumpkin songs and are learning a couple paper books that are "just right" for independent reading practice. There are some choice activities at center time with a pumpkin theme. We are even working on ten frames in math with pumpkin seeds! If you carve jack o'lanterns at home we would recycle any seeds you do not need (for activities at school). Please rinse and dry them first (air or oven) and then send them on in! Thank you!

Science on Friday
Practicing the Scientific Method

Our leader places a small pumpkin in the tank of water.

How much is below the water line?

Do you predict that this size pumpkin will float?

Excitement

Even the larger one?

Observe & record

Nine scientists predicted a pumpkin would sink.
Four scientists predicted a pumpkin would float.
What a great job our scientists did recording their experiment.
I hope your scientist reported out to you at home as well!
Many of the children are expressing they love science, very nice to hear!
